Part IV. Narrative Description of Your Activities

BACKGROUND

Generally, students who fall below average GPA are largely overlooked when it comes to career development and college aid. Many of them, while getting into College, never graduate because they are ill prepared for the demands of the college curriculum and have a poor vision of their career possibilities.

Seminars that press the importance of a college degree, how to get into college, taking college entry exams, finding funds and grants to pay for college, and other related information, help prepare high school juniors and seniors to successfully make the transition into college and eventually graduate. Mentoring programs that give these students practical experience in a field of interest expose them to the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the chosen career and motivate them to pick the right major in college and successfully graduate.

The Applicant is a newly formed organization that has not yet begun operations. Its planned activities will meet a need in the local community for mentoring below average GPA students coming from households of limited means and teaches them the importance of education, equipping them with the skills needed to succeed in college and beyond.

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES

1. Summer Mentoring Program

The Summer Mentoring Program will serve high school juniors and seniors. The program will serve two below average GPA students coming from households with limited means in the first summer, and will gradually increase program participation by 50% each summer.

Students will be paired with a local volunteering business that operates in an industry of interest to the student. The student will shadow employees of the chosen volunteer business for two weeks, exposing him or herself to people in the industry and the practical skills and knowledge required to succeed in the business. The volunteer business will pay the student a moderate stipend for one week that the organization will match for the second week of the program. Thus, the student will learn and appreciate the value of money and work.

The program will be directed by a volunteer director and will utilize local volunteer businesses.

2. Motivational Conference

The Applicant will hold quarterly conferences in local high schools, targeted at high school juniors and seniors. The conference will discuss general requirements for college entry, taking college entry tests, and cover how to receive student loans and grants. In addition, the conferences will discuss various career paths and how to enter the related industry. The conferences will also host volunteer guest speakers that were below average students from households with limited means and feature their stories as to how they overcame this kind of adversity, graduated from college, and moved on to have successful careers.

These motivational conferences will be organized by the volunteer director of the corporation, will be hosted by the local high schools, and will feature volunteer guest speakers.

CONCLUSION

The two above described activities further the Applicant's charitable and educational purposes. The regulations governing exemption eligibility for organizations described under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code are found at 26 CFR 1.501(c)(3)-1. The term "charitable" is defined in section 1.501(c)(3)-1(d)(2) to include "relief of the poor and distressed or of the underprivileged", "advancement of education" and "promotion of social welfare." The mentoring program and motivational conferences of the Applicant further all three of those purposes. The term "educational" is defined in Section 1.501(c)(3)-1(d)(3)(i)(a) which states that educational relates to the instruction or training of the individual for the purpose of improving or developing his capabilities or the instruction of the public on subjects useful to the individual and beneficial to the community. The activities of both the mentoring program and the motivational conferences meet that definition of "educational."
