Part IV. Narrative Description of Your Activities


BACKGROUND

The Applicant. was created to honor the memory of XXXXXXX. Mr. XXXXXXX was involved in the speech and debate programs of several South Florida public high schools throughout his life. Mr. XXXXXXX influenced countless numbers of students' lives through his involvement as a coach for speech and debate teams. His students used the skills they learned from their involvement in Mr. XXXXXXX's programs and translated them into successful careers in public office, law, and teaching positions among many other professions which rely heavily on the ability to communicate effectively. Many of his former students attribute their success in life to the skills they learned from Mr. XXXXXXX.

Since his untimely death, as a result of a lack of funding, and a lack of quality teachers like Mr. XXXXXXX, the speech and debate programs in many South Florida public high schools have deteriorated. The goal of the Applicant is to honor Mr. XXXXXXX's memory by raising funds to help revive these programs that have deteriorated and to provide students with the same experiences as Mr. XXXXXXX provided his students.

ACTIVITIES

The Applicant plans on soliciting donations from the community as well as obtaining grant money which will be used to sponsor speech and debate programs at South Florida public high schools. All of the solicitations for donations will be through volunteer work. The plan is to reach out to Mr. XXXXXXX's former students, as well as members of the community who understand the value of effective communication skills, seeking donations for the Applicant. The goal is to raise money to help re-establish programs at the schools which will prepare the students for public speaking and debate competitions. The Applicant hopes to be able to pay for teachers to run the programs and to prepare the students of the community for these competitions. The Applicant also hopes to sponsor debate competitions in Mr. XXXXXXX's honor.

All of the money raised by the Applicant will go directly to the public schools to support their speech and debate programs.

The Applicant believes strongly in the value of an effective speech and debate program in public schools. These programs provide a great educational foundation for students who hope hold future positions that involve public speaking and critical thinking. By providing funding to these programs, the Applicant will be providing students with valuable educational experiences while also honoring a man who contributed to similar experiences for many students.

CONCLUSION:

The above described activities further the Applicant's charitable and educational purposes. The regulations governing exemption eligibility for organizations described under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code are found at 26 CFR 1.501(c)(3)-1. The term "charitable" is defined in section 1.501(c)(3)-1(d)(2) to include "advancement of education". The activities of the Applicant further that purpose. The term "educational is defined in Section 1.501(c)(3)-1(d)(3)(i)(a) which states that educational relates to the instruction or training of the individual for the purpose of improving or developing his capabilities or the instruction of the public on subjects useful to the individual and beneficial to the community. The activities of the Applicant meet that definition of "educational".
