He had quite large ears which according to family lore were caused by mustard gas during WWI.

General Notes: right side of forehead and cheek. He was fined four days pay for being AWOL from 1:45pm 3 Feb 1917 to 7:00am 4 Feb 1917. On 24 Sep 1917 he was injured why helping move a small arms hand cart during which he slipped and the wheel ran over his right heel requiring evacuation by stretcher to a hospital. The injury caused a dislocated foot which ultimately resulted in disability and on 11 Oct 1918 was transfer to the Royal Army Medical Corps and discharge.

General Notes: His birth registration name was "Harold Allan B Reynolds". The 1891 Census list his age as 4. At the 1901 census he was age 14 living with parents. The 1911 census gave his name as; Allan Harold Blount Reynolds (born 1887, Liverpool), residence - Birkenhead. (Allan Harold Blount Reynolds is deemed correct name since the enumeration sheet was completed by Emily Blount, his mother).

Allan had a good education and was good mannered, well spoken and carefully groomed. He and his sister, Emily Olive, managed their father's surgical instrument business in Hamilton Square, Birkenhead. The company, however, closed in the 1930's perhaps owing to financial difficulties associated with the recession and was taken over by the Mappin family (now Mappin and Webb, long established jewelers in North West England). Being without a profession, he was compelled to support his young family by working in Cammell Laird shipyard as a joiner's labourer. This social decline surely contributed to Allan's frustration throughout his later life.

As told by his grandson, he was a complex man, a wonderful craftsman in wood and metal work who could be charming. Apparently when his daughter Winifred was born he badly wanted a son, which may have contributed to his erratic and occasionally angry behaviour. Allan Reynolds lived through the First World War in which he lost a brother and which also decimated the young male population of Britain. He served as an Air Raid Warden in World War II. In Whitfield Street five houses were bombed and razed to the ground, including his mother's house.

General Notes: He graduated from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba and attended Medical School there beginning September 1924 and graduating June 1929, taking time off on several occasions to earn money. He practiced medicine as a municipal doctor for six years in Wishart, Emerald Township (northwest of Regina), Saskatchewan, Canada. Service was in return for his education at University of Manitoba Medical School. He went back Wishart in the 1970's for a centennial celebration. He was a "special guest".

At age 35 he was accepted for the study of ophthalmology at Moorfields Hospital, London. Accompanied by his mother, he sailed to England from Montreal on the "Dutchess of York" and arrived 26 Sep 1936 at the Port of Liverpool. They gave their proposed address in the UK as; 11 Ormiston Rd., New Brighton. He began a six month course in ophthalmology October1936 and became a house surgeon at the Royal Westminster Eye Hospital May 1937 for an 18 month course ending October 1938. They returned to the United States 22 Dec 1938 on the "Empress of Britain" arriving at the Port of New York. He was on the staff of Manhattan Eye and Ear and St Luke's Hospital for 5 ½ years. Shortly after marriage to Jane Hoffmann and the birth of their first child, the family moved to Hudson, Columbia County, New York, where he conducted a successful 42 year medical practice in ophthalmology.

Works his way along; sells magazines in summer (Father is a preacher, brother is a banker and helps him some). Thinks he spent too much time in Latin in premed. Zoology most useful. Botany is a biological subject. Has not found Medicine too difficult, studies 2-3 hours a night, 4-5 hrs (nights?) a week. Spends a lot of time in church work (Young Church). Reads McLean's Magazine and the Bible. Thinks the Fundamentalists are hair-brained and all at sea. Is attracted by Pediatrics and General Surgery. A good deal of time is wasted in didactic lectures because there is no practical application of the knowledge thus acquired. Would like to have opportunities of following patients through the whole coarse of their illness. If it were not for financial handicaps would spend his time in research - say in T.B.

I was delighted to receive your letter with the list of classmates and a copy of the University of Manitoba Medical Journal.
I was born in Concord, California on May 6, 1901. My father, Reverend James Little was a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. Desiring to be under the British flag again, he moved the family up to Manitoba in November, 1903.
I worked on farms for the summer after finishing High School in Elgin. Looking for a job, the first place I struck was the Grain exchange, where they hired me. With visions of becoming a wealthy grain broker, it was rather a let-down to find that I was just an office boy in the Royal Bank. The job began on Nov. 11th and when word came that the war was over, I, with a lot of other damn fools, rode around town on a trade truck yelling my head off in the cold drizzle, only to catch and nearly die of the flu. After five months in a hot, stuffy office at $37.50 a month, I decided to leave.
On April 9, 1919, arriving in Melfort, Saskatchewan, we slept in a tent on the frozen ground by the railroad and lived under canvass until September 9, with a gang of 18 young fellows surveying lines for the Canadian National. It was a healthy outdoor life. At that time, the buildings at Fort Pelly were almost intact and the Hudson's Bay Trail, it's three to four hundred ruts running 20 miles south past Kamsack on land gently sloping down to the Assiniboine, still in evidence. A pity they let the historic Hudson's Bay post dissintigrate and ploughed up that old trail.
Back in Winnipeg, I ended up in a trust company at $75.00 a month. One Saturday afternoon, when the banks were closed, I cashed an N.S.F. check. The company, of course, cut a bit each month off my pay to make it up. At about this time while having a haircut in a sheet metal building at Portage and Kennedy by a barber from Elgin, and discussing my bad luck, he said, "why don't you become a doctor?" You could see the Medical Arts Building across Portage from where the Toronto Dominion Bank now stands. The idea seemed hopeless, but, after some contemplation, I said to myself - "By golly, come hell or high water, I'm going to be a doctor."
After a 15 week, third class course at the normal school, I began teaching on January 1, 1922. Late in April I was fired because I didn't hit it off too well with the French element in the district. By the first week in May I was teaching (by the lake) 17 miles north of Winnipeg. They closed the school on August 1st so the kids could work on the farms and it remained closed `till spring because the students could not walk to school in the harsh winter.
The morning after I arrived home in Winnipeg, a smooth talking chap from the States called at our house selling MacLean's magazine. While my mother went to get some money, he asked my occupation. "Just finished teaching", I said. "I leave tomorrow to work on a farm", proudly explaining that I could earn $4.00 for a 16 hour day. "Ye Gods", he gasped, "come with me and you'll make more than that in an hour". Having nothing else to do for the afternoon, I went along with him canvassing door-to-door on Furby, Langside, etc. I had planned on teaching and going to college on alternate years but that smooth talking Yank changed my plans. I earned enough during the next five summers selling MacLean's to graduate from old Toba Medical in 1929.
Dermatologist Bedford let me share his office part-time while I was Deer Lodge's first interne. I didn't seem to be doing too well, so I bought a practice in Manitou. If I remember correctly, the better part of my income was derived from my 100 liquor prescriptions each month.
In April, my mother sent me an ad from an old copy of the Free Press about a municipal doctor wanted in Saskatchewan. My letter was in the last batch of mail the secretary collected before driving up to the council meeting in Wishart. Out of 23 applications, Ed Holland was their first choice. I was their second. Ed changed his mind so I began six years as doctor for the Rural Municipality of Emerald #277 at $375.00 a month. I did make a little extra by treating patients outside the municipality and by selling pills, tonics and cod liver oil. Hospitals were, Wadena, 40 miles north, Melville and Yorkton, 100 miles east, Regina, 100 miles south and Saskatoon 180 miles northwest. Birthrate was 150 a year - 700 for the six years.
Returning to Winnipeg June 1, 1936, I again tried to get started. After 3 1/2 months, I didn't see much of a chance so on September 15th, I headed for England. In Liverpool where my Grandfather had practiced 90 years previously, I met Dr. Bernard Chavasses, the famous ophthalmologist who in-formed me that London was the main teaching centre. On October 1st, I began a six months course at Moorfields under Sir John Parsons. Sometime in March, they asked me to become a House Surgeon at the Royal Westminster, now known as the Holborn branch of Moorfields. They appointed two house surgeons a year in each hospital. On applying for my license to practice in London, the man at the counter at the British Medical Association asked where I was from. When I answered, "Manitoba" he said, "Show me your certificate." He handed me my licence with a "Thank you." I replied, "that was easy". He shot back, "My dear young fellow, you will find it is not always that easy." "Why is that", I replied. "Didn't you know that Manitoba is the only Medical Institution in the Western Hemisphere that we accept doctors from?"
My year and a half residency at the Royal Westminster was pleasant and rewarding. In the 3rd six months, one earned about $700 a month from various sources besides free board and room. However, in September of 1938 we cleared out almost all the patients and we were almost disappointed when Hitler decided to wait a little longer before starting the war. I got gyped out of a lot of tips and fees however. I believe I am the only Royal Westminster house surgeon ever to practice in the United States. There have been two in Canada. No Moorfields residents have ever practiced in North America. Our names are all in Gold letters on wood panelling in Moorfields from 1806 and the Royal Westminster from 1816.
For six weeks I was temporary chief ophthalmologist to the British army. In the afternoons I saw patients from all parts of the Empire in a beautiful eye set-up at Millbank Military hospital. In the fore-noons I was part of a team doing physicals on public school boys aspiring to gain admittance to Sandhurst Military School.
Foolishly I decided to leave England and set sail from South Hampton on December 15, 1938 aboard the Empress of Britain to the United States. In New York City I met David H. Webster from Nova Scotia, chief surgeon director of the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital, who talked me into staying there to become his partner. After a time we agreed to separate and I practiced on my own. My brother Robert, after three years residency in nose and throat at the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital, began practicing here in Hudson. The air smelled so good and the surroundings so pleasant that I moved here and gave up my city practice. The one pleasant event during my six years there in New York City was marrying Jane. We were rewarded with seven wonderful children. She died of a stroke in January, 1973.
Our fourth boy, Tom, is a born doctor. He was my optician while in school during the summer and on week-ends. He learned to refract and examine eyes. He was on the Dean's list in Pre-med at Tufts University in Boston. He also was the Captain of the senior track team. Finding it difficult to enter Med. school, he studied Theology at the University of Toronto for two years. When his mother died, he came home. He worked with me for two years, then finished his Theology at Gordon College. He has been a missionary in Afghanistan for two years. I have been trying to get him admitted to Manitoba Med. Not being Canadian, his chances seem rather slim. They are turning down a most remarkable character.
After 35 years in Hudson my practice has become some-what smaller. The doctor's think I'm a bit of a screwball because I practice preventive medicine, largely through nutrition. I have controlled and improved vision in thousands of cataracts and hundreds of glaucomas by use of vitamins. I have also cured every type of corneal ulcer, including herpes without use of drops or curetting. I have had favorable results treating iritis, diabetic retinitis, etc.., but have been unable to have a word published in the journals.
I recently sold my big house in the country and now rent a house near my office, where I live alone, except for one or two of the family with wives and or husbands and grand-children who stay for a while.
I will certainly attend any class reunion.

Jane Hoffman, at age 20 and traveling alone, returned from the trip to Germany, arriving 27 Aug 1936 at the Port of New York on the "Europa".

General Notes: She traveled to Canada arriving at Quebec from Liverpool 10 May 1923 on the "Regina". Purpose of trip was to visit her sister Mrs. Jack McCaughey, 20 Hilda Ave., Hamilton, Ontario. She had $150 provided by her father, H.R. Hembry, Queen's Dr., Mossley Hill, Liverpool. She returned to Liverpool from the Port of New York 27 Apr 1925 on the "Adriatic" accompanied by her sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and John McCaughey. Tribute, London Times published 18 Apr 1960, J. C. V. W. writes: You published a brief factual obituary of "Clem" Morgan. May I - as a friend, and as Warden of Radley, during his sub- wardenship - pay a brief tribute to a remarkable man? To say that he was a born teacher and a beloved house-master, true as that is, gives but part of the truth; the same can justly be said of many devoted men. But Clem was different somehow - and in my experience unique. He was a real lover of men - all sorts and kinds of men and boys, and fools and knaves and even pedants and prigs.
In part this was just natural kindness, largeness of heart: but it was not just undiscriminating easy-going tolerance - far from it. He had a very critical percipient intelligence, but he was himself very humble: and he had the gift of seeing the ridiculous in people - in his pupils, in their parents, in his friends and in himself - an innocent whole-hearted enjoyment of the absurd which altogether excluded malice or resentment, and made him so lovable. I have seen him laugh at himself till tears ran from his eyes. But if one was in need of help or advice he was the staunchest of friends and the wisest of counsellors. Radley felt that Michaelhouse was fortunate in their choice and so from all accounts events have proved abundantly.

Mr. A. K. Boyd writes: After a period at Liverpool College, Morgan went to Radley as an assistant master in 1928, where he became a house- master and sub-warden to the Rev. J. C Vaughan Wilkes. He was an inspiring teacher of classics, as well as an effective Rugby football coach, and his gift for friendship, combined with sound judgment, a natural authority and real sincerity of purpose gave him an unusual standing with both masters and boys. In 1953, at the -age of 50, he started on an unknown future and accepted the Rectorship of Michaelhouse. Though his bent was for personal relations rather than administration, his handling of the difficulties besetting a Church school in the Union, where political questions complicated the normal problems of headmastership, greatly increased his stature; and it fell to him to play a large part in the establishment of the Michaelhouse Trust. In one of his chief aims-to raise the standard of VI form work-he can be credited with a large measure of success. Countless friends and ex-pupils in England and South Africa will remember Clem Morgan with deep affection and respect. His wife, who contributed so much to the happiness which he enjoyed in his work survives him, with two sons and two daughters.

News Article, Irish Times, published 28 July 1900. GALLANTRY OF A BOY On Tuesday, a very small boy, names O'Flarty, was sailing a toy boat on the slip in the harbour of refuge, at Holyhead, when, it is presumed, he accidently fell into the water. No one seems to have seen the accident, but shortly afterwards a boy about 14 years of age, names John Rowlands, son of the Kingstown Piermaster, observed an object floating on the surface of the water. At first, he thought it was an inanimate object, but seeing it move, he concluded it was a human being, as what appeared to be a head was noticeable above the water. He immediately took off his coat and jumped into the water. On swimming to the boy he seemed lifeless, as he was totally unconscious of the presence of his gallant preserver. Rowlands succeeded in getting him safely ashore, and animation was soon restored.

Obituary - IRISH TIMES, published Thursday, October 4, 1934: Captain John Rowlands (An Appreciation). There were few better known men, certainly none better loved, around the coast of Ireland than Captain John Rowlands of the Irish Lights steamer Alexandra, who died last week at the comparatively early age of 43 years. For two years he had been in bad health, but, even so, his death was a shock to the Irish Lights Service. He was given a sailors funeral on the 27th ult. by his ship's company and the crew of the Isolda; the Commissioners of the Irish Lights, headed by the Right Hon. Mr. A. Jameson, accompanied by the Earl of Meath, Mr. R. N. Guinness, Dr. Watson, etc., were there and the cortège to Dean's Grange Cemetery was most imposing.

Commodore of the Irish Lights fleet, he had been in the service from 1910, and since 1915 had commanded in turn three of the Board's steamships (Irene, Teraght and Alexandra) "to the entire satisfaction of the Commissioners" in the words of the resolution of the Irish Lights Board passed at a meeting on the 26th ult. The resolution went on to say -"They desire to place on record their sense of the great loss which they and the Irish Lighthouse Service as a whole have sustained by the deprivation of his invaluable services, and desire to convey their sympathy to the members of his family in their bereavement."

Captain Rowlands was born to the sea. He was the elder son of Captain John Rowlands, who for over forty years was pier master at Kingstown while the old City of Dublin Steam Packet Company held the mail contract. John Rowlands wend to sea early, serving his apprenticeship in a "Windjammer". He took some time to "go into steam" and when he did there was no more competent ship's officer. He took out his Extra Master's "ticketet" and the crews who served under him and implicit trust in his luck and his judgment, which had a testing trial during the war through the submarine campaign.

The will stated; I also will that the guardianship of my second son James Wingfield Blower revert to the Administrator General and be not passed on by him to another. Despite the requirement not to pass on the guardianship to another, it was recited many times in the Inventory that payments were made to his maternal uncle William Boyd Monk Esq. as guardian of the person and property of James Wingfield Blower… (Perhaps the order was amended).

He was listed on ships' manifest (City of Karachi) traveling first class from Calcutta to England arriving 6 Jun 1916. His name was given as "Master Blower, age 15 and a student. He was listed on a ships' manifest dated 3 Sep 1920 traveling first class from England to Calcutta. He gave his occupation as "student" and age 19. Listed on the same manifest was Robert Boyd Monk (his cousin), also traveling first class, "student" age 17.

In 1940 he operated a highly successful company dealing in metals at 1940 Glasgow, Scotland, but the business was killed off by the war. Too old to enlist in the military or be called up he managed to get into the Royal Indian Naval reserve and went out to India in 1944 for about a year. After the war and back in England he had difficulties establishing British citizenship because he was born in India (after India became independent the UK government passed a Nationalities Act which basically gave people the nationality of their place of birth unless they could prove British parents). In 1940 he had submitted an Application for Birth or Baptismal Certificate in the name of James Wingfield Blower, date of birth 23 May 1901, place of Birth Tindharia (near Darjeeling), India. He was not certain of the exact date of baptism stating "approx. 1906-1908" "in private house at Mr. Hembry, 65 Malone Ave, Belfast", Religious sect Methodist, father: Thomas Henry Blower of London, profession: Tea Planter (at birth), later Paint Manufacturer, Calcutta, Mother Emily Monk. He signed the application as J.W. Blower, 173, Tantallon, Glasgow, Scotland.

He was reported to have been seriously overweight, a heavy smoker and very fond of tea. He was a very good story teller & very keen on India. On 10 Sep 1962 he privately published a book entitled; Rational Relativity (Concerns Einstein's Theory of Relativity. The introduction makes clear that it is intended for those who are conversant with it)

James married Dorothy Eva GRAY,⁷ ^,65 ^,273 ^,274 daughter of William Henry GRAY and Charlotte Elizabeth BUCKBY, in 1928 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England.¹⁸⁹ Dorothy was born on 6 Sep 1899 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England^{⁶⁵^,97^,274^,363} and died in May 1992 in Bromley, Kent, England^⁶⁵ at age 92.

General Notes: She graduated from the University of London (M.B., B.S.) and studied medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in 1917. Received her registration to practice medicine 21 Dec 1923. She was a doctor in the Gorbals area of Glasgow, a notorious slum. During WW2 she went around the Gorbals on a bicycle visiting her patients. She retired about 1964.

She worked as a General Practitioner (Medical), 173, Tantallon Road from 1937 to 1944 at Langside, Glasgow, Scotland. ³⁶⁵ She worked as a General Practitioner (Medical), 262, Stanstead Road, Forest Hill from 1946 to 1964 at London, England. ³⁶⁵ The building was a large rambling Victorian house which served as both residence and office with her medical practice in part of the ground floor. She retired in 1964 but continued doing locums for some years(assisting other GP's in their practice locations).
She resided at 34, Church Avenue from 1965 to 1984 at Beckenham, Kent, England. ³⁶⁵ only two miles from her former Stanstead Road professional address.

Listed on the same manifest was James Winfield Blower (his cousin), also traveling first class, "student" age 19. He was boarding at Bishop's Stortford College, Hertfordshire, England (founded 1868 by a group of prominent nonconformist). At age 24, he appeared on ships' manifest, "Saxon" arriving 4 Nov 1927 at Southampton from Cape Town. He gave his occupation as "tea planter", India as last county of permanent residence. He gave proposed address in the UK as; 50 St. Albans Ave, Chiswick (Greater London). (his name was penciled out suggesting he may not have arrive)

The following entry was contained in "The London Gazette", 31 May 1929, page 3591 under the heading, ARMY IN INDIA RESERVE OF OFFICERS: 2nd Lt. Robert Boyd Monk is removed from the A.I.R.O., His Majesty having no further need for his services. 16th Jul 1928.

He traveled to England on the Winchester Castle arriving at Southampton (London), England, 28 Sep 1956 from South Africa. He gave his name as Robert Boyd-Monk and the following information; address in the UK; 20 Cromwell Rd, Harrogate; occupation "Stores Offr."; citizen of "S. Rhodesia; county of last permanent residence and future permanent residence "N. Rhodesia": Intended duration of stay in the UK, six months. Also listed on manifest was his wife Rose and two sons; Christopher [Michael C.] and Robert [Errol Robert].

His daughter commented June 2011; He hated school, and also eventually "ran away" from England too. I think it was tough for a kid from India being sent to a rather snotty school in England, especially when his linguistic accomplishments were not recognized. He spoke Hindustani, Urdu and Bengali, and when he got to Africa he quickly assimilated Chinianza,(Northern Rhodesia) Shona (Southern Rhodesia) and Chicherwa (Nyasaland). Languages came very easily to him.

Robert married Edith Frances TORR,²⁹⁶ daughter of Percy Braithwaite TORR and Abby JELLY, on 16 Oct 1935 in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, South Africa.²⁹⁶ The marriage ended in divorce about 1950. Edith was born about 1911.^³⁶⁸

129 M ii. Errol Robert BOYD-MONK ¹⁶⁷ ^,296 was born on 1 Feb 1941 in Northern Rhodesia^¹⁶⁷ and died in 1959 in Rhodesia^²⁹⁶ at age 18.

Robert next married Rose JENNINGS,¹⁶⁷ ^,210 daughter of Silas Harris JENNINGS and Catherin HEGARTY,. Rose was born on 21 Dec 1916 in Yorkshire, England^{⁶⁵^,167^,210} and died in 1981 in Lewisham, London, England^⁶⁵ at age 65. Another name for Rose was Jenny.
