Persons wishing to use copyrighted material from this site for purposes of their own that go beyond 'fair use' must first obtain permission from the copyright owner. 7/4/04 - Miami Harold NANA gives small-business owners a hand County Commissioner Betty Ferguson of District 1 recently hosted a technical assistance workshop for 22 small-business owners in North Miami-Dade who received grants from the county's District 1 Mom & Pop Small Business Grant Program. Workshop participants, who applied for and received a total of $100,000 in grant money, were told about subjects such as incorporating, obtaining bank loans, marketing and employee training. The workshop was promoted by the Miami-Dade Empowerment Trust and Leroy Jones, executive director of the Neighbors and Neighbors Association, and was held at the Miami Job Corps Center, 3050 NW 183rd St. ''The Mom & Pop Program has been a wonderful way to help deserving businesses who just need a little assistance financially and educationally so their companies can thrive and, in return, boost the local economy,'' Ferguson said. A District 1 selection committee responsible for choosing the grant winners comprised Beverley Coffey, manager of the North Dade Community Development Credit Union; Benjamin Essien, president of EPS Engineering; and Shirley Coles, a Miami-Dade teacher.
