Death Notes: Obituary, Akron Beacon Journal published 4 Jul 1995: Catherine Simmons Russell, 83, of Akron died July 2, 1995 at Hospice Care Center.
A life resident of Akron, Catherine was the eldest daughter of Dr. Hezzleton Simmons, former president of the University of Akron, and one of the founders of the Rotary Camp for crippled children. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma at the University of Akron, and past president of Junior League.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Irving Russell.....
General Notes: She was President of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at the University of Akron (where her father was president of the school), and was elected May Queen in her senior year. Following graduation, the KKG sorority asked her to enroll at Goucher College in Towson MD, where she took a degree in Fine Arts and set up the KKG chapter there. She returned to Akron and became engaged to Vernay Molesworth, Personnel Director of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company but did not marry him. Her children had always been grateful that we didn't end up with the name Molesworth.
She worked in the personnel department for Fireston Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio. The most difficult task she had was to hire someone with a financial background who was at ease internationally and could speak different languages. Firestone at that time, although a very large corporation, was basically run by unsophisticated "farm boys" who were having growing pains in expanding worldwide.
She was not employed after marriage, although she had a great many social connections and had been the President of the Junior League in the area.
Catherine married Howard Irving RUSSELL Jr.,1098,1103 son of Howard Irving RUSSELL and Edith White RICHARDSON, on 25 Nov 1937 in Akron, Summit, Ohio.1102 Howard was born on 2 Oct 1905 in Somerville, Middlesex, Massachusetts473 and died on 9 Sep 1968 in Akron, Summit, Ohio404,473 at age 62.
General Notes: He was the middle son of Howard Irving and Edith Russell and lived on Electric Avenue, Somerville, Massachusetts. His brothers were Norman and Edward Holton. He had been quite close to his mother who died when in his last semester at Dartmouth College, class of 1927. Not having the heart to continue, he dropped out of school.
Among the Dartmouth Class of '27 was a rambling playboy named Wenley Dodd Nelson. Wenley's parents planned to send him on the customary European tour after graduation, but they worried about his potential misbehavior and offered to pay my Howard's way as an upstanding and reliable "chaperon". The two of them went overseas, where Wenley had several escapades and had to be jerked back home. Howard stayed in Europe, which he found much to his liking. He settled in Antwerp and took a job with the Gulf Oil Company, having taught himself accounting. As Hitler rose to power, Gulf presented all of its American-citizen employees with tickets home. Needing a hernia operation at the time, sold the ticket, had the operation, and re-applied for his old Gulf job, claiming to be a Belgian. He was a handsome man with wavy hair and blue eyes and continued to live in Antwerp until the Anschluss, when his Belgian friends forced him onto a boat for New York. Not wanting to return to New Hampshire, he answered an employment ad in the New York Times placed by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, Ohio. When his resume arrived in the Firestone personnel department, Catherine Simmons, his wife to be slit it open the envelope and a photograph fell out. She looked for a long time at the picture, and then handed it across to a co-worker. "Look, Louise", she said, "Here's the man I'm going to marry."
After marriage he continued to travel worldwide for Firestone and would frequently come home from the office with word that he would go overseas in the morning. Sometimes the trips took a week, sometimes several months. The entire year when his son was a senior in high school, he was living in the Hotel Georges V in Paris. His wife often said she never got west of Muncie, Indiana, although in fact they had honeymooned in South America and had been involved in spying for the State Department.
Noted events in his life were:
He had a residence in 1930 at Manchester, Hillsborough, New Hampshire. 1401
Children from this marriage were:

Eulogy by John F. Morrison (morrisj@phillynews.com: JACK SIMMONS Salta packed a lot of creativity in a life shortened by years of suffering from AIDS.
His life was a true profile in courage as he battled the debilitating disease and the side effects from the medication that was developed to prolong the lives of its sufferers.
He died Feb. 21 at age 49. He had lived in Center City for more than 20 years, and recently in North Philadelphia.
Jack Simmons Salta grew up on Long Island, the son of an Italian American father and mother of English descent who worked in the halcion days of T.V. and radio as a group singer, later as a private voice teacher and school teacher. His growing up years were filled with music and the jovial upbeat culture of his father's large extended Sicilian family. At age 11, Jack's parents divorced having a profoundly disturbing effect on him at a time when he was becoming more aware of his sexual identity, and in need of stable family support. Much of Jack's emotional pain and disturbance was derived from this life changing event, informing his artistic sensibility as a song writer and artist.
Jack Simmons Salta was a cousin of Red Socks catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. His grandfather was Hezzelton E. Simmons, former president of Akron University, Ohio, and pioneer in the field of rubber chemistry. He is also a descendant of William Bradford of the Mayflower and Ohio abolitionists whose homes were stops on the underground railroad.

She made her professional stage debut in 1930, supporting her mother in Scarlet Sister Mary. A big break for Miss Colt came when George White signed her to star in his 1931 Scandals which co-starred Ethel Merman, Rudy Vallee and Willie and Eugene Howard. But after her role was reduced to one music number, she decided to leave the revue. Mr. White said that when Miss Merman joined the show he was forced to give her some of Miss Colt's songs. She then went out on her own to learn the trade "from the ground up". For five years of one-night stands, she performed with the Jitney Players. She ran a summer stock company and played in stock, vaudeville and small nightclubs. Between tours she studied voice and soon was singing in small opera companies. A lyric soprano, she sang more than 100 concerts. Miss Colt also lectured extensively on the American musical theater, and appeared in on-woman shows.
