Death Notes: Obituary - The Seattle Times published Jan 31, 1959; H.D. COLLIER, RETIRED OIL EXECUTIVE, DIES. H. D. Collier, 83, retired president and board chairman of Standard Oil Co. of California, died last night in a San Francisco hospital after a short illness. Mr. Collier had been retired since 1955. He joined the oil firm in 1903 in Seattle as a salesman. He also was in the Tacoma and Portland offices before he went to San Francisco. He became a director in 1924 and for many years served as the chairman of the board. He was chairman during the company's greatest era of expansion in the West.
Mr. Collier retired as chairman in 1949. He was born in San Francisco. He was reared in Port Townsend and other Puget Sound communities.
Mr. Collier was a director of several banks and active in the Republican Part. He is survived by his wife Mae.

Burial Notes: Cypress Lawn Memorial Park.

General Notes: Henry Deward Collier is not well known as a seafarer and his obituary in the New York Times made no mention of it, but he loved ships. He was descended from a long line of Connecticut sea captains who worked the whaling trade and ran schooners between Calcutta, Sydney, Shanghai and the US West Coast in the great days of sail. He started on Washington state's Puget Sound in the 1890s as an engineer on the Flyer, the pride of the "mosquito fleet" that provided transport across and along the Sound.

He was best known as the founding chairman of Aramco, today the world's largest oil company, and also chairman of what is known today as Chevron. It was shrewdness that led him to form the partnership of Mobil, Exxon, Texaco and SoCal that became known as Aramco, and King Faisal of Saudi Arabia was as enthusiastic as he. It assured that there would be sufficient markets for distributing the large quantities of Saudi oil that SoCal had discovered, and that the British would not have a hand in it as Faisal feared British domination. He believed very much in tapping the spirit and energy of the soldiers coming back from the Second World War. He developed what he named the Chevron dealership network to offer men an opportunity to work with the Standard Oil Company of California, rather than for it, guessing that returning soldiers, after years in the armed forces, would not welcome the stability and remoteness of a major corporation as they had in the jobless 1930s. It was the beginning of the Chevron brand.

He started with Standard Oil in the early 1900s. His first job was working the wharves of Seattle drumming up an oil business in the marine industry by persuading steamboat operators to convert from burning cord wood or coal to burning oil. He approached Joshua Green, the legendary Seattle Banker and owner of the Athlon whose compound engine had recently been replaced with a triple expansion steam engine to consider conversion to oil fuel. Green initially declined, telling him "Harry, that stuff blows up!" To prove the contrary, Collier rigged up an oil burner under the boiler, and then dropped a lighted match in the oil tank. When no explosion ensued, Collier had made his sale.

He was devoted to public service, working hard to ensure that his company supported the Red Cross, the War Chest, international relief and many other charities. He worked hard to ensure the accession of his friend Dwight Eisenhower to the Presidency. But for him, charity began at home, and he ensured to the best of his ability that his relations had jobs in the darkest days of the Great Depression. He adapted well to change, and it was the facility with which he did so that I think defined his life.

His summer home in Los Gatos was known as Sun Acres, a 1932 two story, ten room country home. He often played host to captains, admirals and other men of the sea. Four nieces became the wives of admirals in time, and he took great pleasure in that, as an old sea dog should. But the ship that was named for him, the oil tanker HD Collier, was sunk by a Japanese submarine in the war with a great loss of life.

General Notes: Biographical Sketch - SIMMONS, Hezzleton E.: An educator whose teaching experience was chiefly in the field of chemistry, the late Hezzleton E. Simmons became president of Akron University, serving capably in that office for nearly a score of years. Toward the end of his life he headed the Scholarship Committee of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, and he was active in many other organizational connections. His varied achievements included authorship and significant chemical research.
He was born at Lafayette, Ohio, on October 30, 1885, son of George Erastus and Anna (Farnum) Simmons. His father, who was born July 10, 1859, was a farmer. His death occurred May 20, 1932. The Simmons family had been in this country since an immigrant ancestor settled at Scituate, Massachusetts, about 1650.
Attending public elementary and high schools at LeRoy, Ohio, Hezzleton E. Simmons went on to his advanced studies at Buchtel College, where he received his degree of Bachelor of Science in 1908. He took his degree of Master of Science at the University of Pennsylvania in 1912. He later received honorary degrees as Doctor off Science from the College of Wooster, 1934, and Doctor of Laws from the University of Toledo in 1937, and from the University of Akron in 1953. In his college days he became a member of Lone Star Fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa.
Mr. Simmons was assistant in chemistry at Buchtel College while a student there, 1906-1908. From 1908-1910, he was instructor in chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania. He then returned to Buchtel College, where he was assistant professor of chemistry until 1912. Throughout the years from 1912-1933, Dr. Simmons was concurrently professor of chemistry at Buchtel College and Akron University.
He was named president of Akron University in 1933, and served until 1951, when he became president emeritus. The year after his retirement from the presidency, he assumed duties as executive director of the Scholarship Committee of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, and served until his death.
While head of the chemistry department of the University of Akron, Dr. Simmons developed the world's first rubber chemistry curriculum, which attracted students from all over the world. He was a gifted teacher who inspired many students to go on to graduate work. He was able to bring to the rubber industry many trained men to meet their technical needs. Throughout his teaching career, he acted as a private consultant on manufacturing problems, thus giving his student practical training in coping with the technical difficulties posed by industry. As president of the university he introduced a group of general education courses, predating the famed Harvard Report by two years. He also initiated the first Campus Development Program for the university---a program which resulted in the erection of an engineering building, a student center, a chemistry building, a major addition to the library, and an athletic service building. When Dr. Simmons became the eighth president of his alma mater, the university's assets were $1,381,000, and day and evening enrollment totaled a little more than two thousand. When he retired in 1951, the university's financial assets had grown to $6,600,000, and there were nearly five thousand students enrolled.
Dr. Simmons was a reserve officer in the Chemical Warfare Service, United States Army, from 1923-1935. He was associate chief of the Rubber Branch of the War Production Board in 1942, and consultant in the office of the Rubber Director from 1942-1944. His outstanding research work was in the field of rubber chemistry, and he was the author of a number of articles on this and related fields published in technical and scientific journals. He was also the author of two major works: "Cultivation, Chemical Testing and Manufacturing of Rubber" (1921) and "Rubber Manufacture" (1922).
He was a member of the Association of Urban Universities, the American Chemical Society, Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft, and the Akron Art Institute which he served as a trustee. He was a member of the Metropolitan Park Board in his home city, the Police Pension Board, the Rotary Club and the Akron City Club. Capable in business affairs as well as in scientific research and educational administration, he was a director of the Ohio Farmers' Insurance Association and the Evans Savings and Loan Association.
Dr. Simmons attended the Universalist Church. Fond of the out-of-doors, his favorite sports were fishing and baseball. He and Mrs. Simmons had a summer home at Pointe Au Baril, Ontario.
She was the former Miss Agnes Lillian Whiton, and they were married at Amherst, Ohio, on July 29, 1909. Her parents were Joseph Lucas and Annette Josephine (Gawn) Whiton. Her father was a farmer. The Whiton farm was a part of the Western Reserve land grant which was allotted veterans of the Revolutionary War. Dr. and Mrs. Simmons became the parents of the following children: 1. George Hezzleton, born in 1910. 2. Catherine Whiton, who was born in 1912. She became the wife of Howard I. Russell. 3. Mary Agnes, born in 1916. She married Dr. Harold A. Zintel. 4. Death Notes: Obituary, Hartford Courant, published Jul 9, 1960; R. G. COLT OF FASMED FAMILY DIES, PROVIDENCE, R. I.: Russell Griswold Colt, 78, a son of the man who established the famed 500 - acre Colt farm and drive in Bristol, died suddenly Friday at James Brown Hospital. His home was Linden Place, the family mansion in Bristol.
Born in Bristol, Colt was a son of Col. Samuel Pomeroy Colt and Elizabeth Bullock Colt and a nephew of former U.S. Sen. Lebaron Colt.
Wed to Ethel Barrymore
Colt was the husband of Gwendolyn Moran Colt and was the former husband of the late Ethel Barrymore.
Colt had been involved in attempts to clear away technicalities of Col. Colt's will that had blocked attempts to sell the famous farm. At issue was a clause in the will which set up the property as a trust to be held for Col. Colt's last surviving grandchild.
A move to make a state park out of the farm died this year in the General Assembly.
Miss Barrymore and Colt were wed in 1909. After numerous separations and reconciliations, they were divorced in 1923, though Miss Barrymore remained friendly with the Colt family.
They had three children, Ethel Barrymore Colt, Samuel Pomeroy Colt and John Drew Colt. All have appeared on either the stage of screen.
Colt remarried in 1940
His father, Col. Colt, was president of the United States Rubber Co. and president and board chairman of the Industrial Trust Co.
He was a nephew of Samuel Colt of Hartford, founder of Colt's Patent Fire Arms Co.
Russell Colt was in the brokerage business and in the munitions business with the Lewis Arms Co. before retiring in 1939.

General Notes: His father's will gave him $100,000 in cash in addition to the remainder interest in a $50,000 trust fund and one-sixth of the residuary estate and the estate at Mamaroneck, New York, that Samuel Colt had recently purchased.

Noted events in his life were:

He resided at 105 Waterman Street in 1900 at Providence, Providence, Rhode Island. 504 He was enumerated at the residence of LeBaron Colt, his uncle. He worked as a Stock Broker in 1917. 421 He had a residence in 1917 at Mamaroneck, Westchester, New York. 421 He was a retired stockbroker and executive of the Lewis Arms Company. Residence at Death: Jul 1960, Bristol, Bristol, Rhode Island. 1193

Russell married Ethel BARRYMORE,1194 daughter of Maurice BARRYMORE and Georgina DREWES, on 14 Mar 1909. The marriage ended in divorce in 1923. Ethel was born on 15 Aug 1879 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, died on 18 Jun 1959 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California at age 79, and was buried in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California. Another name for Ethel was Ethel Mae BLYTHE.

Marriage Notes: The couple had been introduced, according to Barrymore's autobiography, when Colt had strolled by the table where she was having lunch with her uncle, actor John (Jack) Drew, in Sherry's Restaurant in New York. A New York Times article of 1911, when Barrymore first took preliminary divorce measures against Colt, states that Colt had been introduced to Barrymore by her brother John Barrymore while Colt was still a student at Yale.

Their marriage was a precarious one from the start, with Barrymore filing divorce papers as early in the marriage as 1911, much to Colt's surprise. At least one source claims that Colt abused her and also that he fathered a child with another woman while married to Barrymore. They divorced in 1923 and, quite surprisingly, she did not seek alimony from Colt, which was her right. Ethel Barrymore never remarried.

Burial Notes: She was buried in Calvary Cemetery.

General Notes: She was the sister of actors John Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore, the aunt of actor John Drew Barrymore, and the great-aunt of actress Drew Barrymore. She was also the niece of Broadway matinée idol John Drew Jr. and early Vitagraph movie star Sidney Drew. She spent her childhood in Philadelphia, and attended Roman Catholic schools there.

Ethel Barrymore was a highly regarded stage actress in New York City and a major Broadway performer. Many today consider her to be the greatest actress of her generation. She appeared in her first motion picture, The Nightingale, in 1914. She won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 1944 film None but the Lonely Heart opposite Cary Grant. In 1949, Barrymore appeared in the Academy Award winning film Pinky for which she was awarded an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Brought up in Los Angeles wealth and graduated from Mt. Colt went on to write for such magazines as Town and Country and to work in public relations. But her most famous and longest tenure was with Conde Nast as West Coast editor of its leading magazines of fashion and taste, Vogue and House and Garden. Known professionally as Eleanore Phillips from her nearly 30-year marriage to Franklyn Phillips, she not only guided West Coast coverage for 42 years but also introduced top Eastern writers to the wonders of Los Angeles. Among other things, she told him, "Garbo loved all the old buildings and parks but especially the commotion in the street--people dashing about, doing business, living their lives. Downtown was fabulous. And compared to Hollywood and Santa Monica it was so invigorating." After a divorce, in 1981 she married Samuel Barrymore Colt, the son of Ethel Barrymore. He died in 1986.
