Stricken ten days ago, after being a semi-invalid for some years, William H. Collier veteran of the Confederate Army and resident of Washington for forty-three years, died early this morning at his home in East Seattle. Mr. Collier was well known among the pioneer of Washington, with whom he had long fraternized, for it was in 1872 that he came to Puget Sound from his native state of Georgia to establish his home.
He was born 68 years ago and served in the Confederate Army and was prominently identified with the local organization of Confederate veterans.
Mr. Collier leaves a widow and the following children; Mrs. James F. Lane, Mrs. Arden L. Smith, Mrs. Charles Fairbairn, Mrs. C.B. Sandefer and W. L. Collier, all of this city and H.D. Collier of San Francisco. The body is at the Bonney-Watson follows.

General Notes: He grew up on the ocean traveling the waters with his father beginning at the age of four when his mother died. His school experiences began in Connecticut then New York moving on to Hong Kong, China, and Calcutta. His first marine experience consisted in sailing out of New York and Southern ports to Australia and the Orient. When the Civil War broke out, he returned to the United States and for a time was in the recruiting service for the Confederate army up until August, 1864, when he went to Australia where he worked for the Sydney Morning Herald and the Melbourne Argus. In 1868 he resumed a seafaring life as an marine engineer, traveled the world visiting nearly every important port and helped usher in the conversion to steam. He arrived in San Francisco in 1872, and began running to Victoria on the steamship Prince Alfred. He was mostly in the merchant marine, but for a time was connected with the United States Coast Survey, which work he did not particularly like.

Mr. Collier first came to Seattle in 1859, and subsequently dropped anchor in Puget Sound several times. Being attracted by the future prospects of the city, he finally decided to make the area his permanent home in 1876. For many years he was the chief engineer on nearly all the steamers on the routes out of Seattle. When not on the water he made his home at Bangor, Kitsap County, Washington. In 1901 he retired from the water and went to East Seattle (Mercer Island). In retirement he accepted a position as Secretary and Business Manager of the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, an association of about four hundred members worldwide. He was also employed as inspector of steam boilers and elevators

Death Notes: Obituary - The Seattle Times published Nov 6, 1936, Mrs. William H Collier: Funeral Services for Mrs. Anne Winston Collier, a pioneer Seattle resident, held Monday at the Wee Kirk of Heather, Glendale, Calif. She died Friday in Beverly Hills, Calif., where she was visiting relatives. She was 80 years old. Mrs. Smith (sic) was the mother of Henry D. Collier, San Francisco, vice president of the Standard Oil Company of California.
Born in London, Mrs. Collier came to the United States in 1872 and to Seattle in 1874. She was the widow of William H. Collier, a marine engineer, who died in 1915.
Besides her son in San Francisco, Mrs. Collier is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Arden L. Smith and Mrs. J. F. Lane, Seattle; Mrs. Charles Fairbairn and Mrs. Cleveland B Sandefer of Beverly Hills, and a son, William L. Collier, also of Beverly Hills.

General Notes: Sarah Rachel was adopted by Lemuel and Huldah (Hickox) Collier. Her birth location may have been in Jefferson County, Ohio, and had four or five siblings. Sarah was the youngest child and her mother, Rachel, died close to her birth date. Her Death Certificate stated father was Luke Shaw who also died shortly after she was born. Lemuel was granted guardianship of Sarah about 1865.

Sarah married Almon P. Hallock in Aug 1866. In 1870 at age 25, she was living with children; Lemuel C (age 3) and Frank (age 11 months) at mother's residence of Huldah F Collier (Mother). Her husband, Almon Hallock was not listed. At the 1900 census she gave her status as widow and head of household. She had four children, three still living. Also at residence in Westfield, Ohio, were Frank A. Hallock (age 30), occupation, Farmer and "Mgta" H (age 20) who was "at school". At the 1910 and 1920 census she was living at the residence of her son Frank A. Hallock and his family in Westfield, Ohio. At the 1930 census, Sarah R Hallock at age 87 was living with grandson Almon Hallock and his family in Lakeland, Florida.

He served in; Ford's Cavalry Company, Illinois beginning 1 Jan 1862 and mustered out 25 Dec 1862. He then transferred to Co. L, 15th Cavalry Regiment, Illinois, and mustered out 12 May 1864. He enlisted 28 May 1864 and was promoted to Full Sergeant Major in the 60th Infantry Regiment U.S. Colored Troops. He was promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 19 Sep 1864 and mustered out on 15 Oct 1865 at Devalls Bluff, Arkansas.

The date of his application for pension appears to be Sep 12, 1870 and the date for his "widows" application for pension appears to be Aug 24, 1893 [dates somewhat illegible]

Burial Notes: She was buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery.

General Notes: Her mother was frail and since Ellen was the oldest child, she had to assume much of the responsibilities. A trusted and affectionate friend, Mary, lived with them and did most of the housework. Her mother's father, Sylvanus Jones, a stern and strict Presbyterian, lived with them for a number of years. He would not allow any play nor playthings be touched on the Sabbath, which started at sundown on Saturday night. When her father was appointed Chaplain in the Regular Army, they moved to Fort Pembino, Dakota Territory where she was married to Louis Kossuth Warner, a Methodist minister.

Death Notes: Obituary, The Sandusky Star, Sandusky, Ohio, 26 Mar 1904, page 5: FORMER / Pastor of Trinity Church is Dead / Rev. Louis K. Warner Succumbed to Sudden Attack of Apoplexy at Delaware: The Rev Louis Kossuth Warner, a former pastor of Trinity Methodist Episcopal church of this city, died suddenly at Delaware, O., on Friday from apoplexy.
Mr. Warner was born in Tuscarawas county, graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and from Drew Theological Seminary and in 1878 entered the North Ohio conference. His last several pastoral charges were Cardington, Millersburg, Clyde, Sandusky and Mt. Vernon. At the time of his death he was presiding elder of the Mansfield district, in his fourth year of service and lived in Delaware.
Rev. Warner had not been in robust health since a severe sickness he suffered when in Sandusky, but continued at his work, even against the judgment of his brethren in the ministry. It was felt last fall, at the conference that he ought not to take work another year, and all were apprehensive that it would he his last, but his intense zeal for work compelled him to continue.
He was an indefatigable worker, a good preacher and sympathetic pastor. He was not an old man, having reached the age of 54. He leaves a wife and one daughter, and has one brother, who is now a physician, Dr. M. F. Warner, of Cleveland, and one in the ministry, pastor of the Me. E. Church, of Oberlin.
The funeral will b held in Delaware Monday at 3:00 p.m.

General Notes: He was born in a log cabin, the third of eleven children of Thomas and Catherine Lister Warner. His father had no formal education, but always read by candlelight and instilled a love of reading in all this children. Louis attended Ohio Wesleyan University for one year and then taught for two years, having then sufficient savings to enter Drew Theological Seminary from which he graduated in 1878. He served a number of Methodist Churches in Ohio; died of a stroke March 25, 1904. His Tombstone inscription; "Minister of M.E. Church"

General Notes: Durbin and his wife to be, Lydia Schreckengast, were classmates (total of only seven students) in the class of 1887 at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. After graduation he homesteaded two quarter sections in Crook County, Wyoming. Upon returning to Iowa he married Lydia and settled on his father's farm six miles southeast of Wilton where they remained for 36 years, raising four sons. Operation of the farm was turned over to their son, Mark Schreckengast Collier, in 1923. He retired 1924 and moved to Wilton, spending winters in Tempe, Arizona. She had been in failing health for several years but had been seriously ill but-four weeks with a heart ailment Mrs. Collier had been a resident of the community for 56 years. The former Lydia Ann Schreckengast, daughter of Isaac and Sarah Schreckengast, she born Aug 10, 1862 at Danville, IA and spent her youth there. She was graduated from Iowa State College at Ames in 1885. Her marriage to Durbin B. Collier took place on June 2, 1887 at Keota, IA, and the couple settled on a farm six miles southeast of Wilton where they resided for 37 years. They retired in 1924 and moved to Wilton. Mr. and Mrs. Collier celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on June 2, 1937. Mr. Collier's death occurred Dec. 29, 1937. Surviving are four sons; Paul S. of Rochester, N. Y., George W of Washington, D. C., Oakley B. and Mark S, both of Wilton township, and 10 grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Mary Marr of Keota and Mrs. Ella Bailey of Tempe, Ariz. A brother, Amos Schreckengast, died in January, 1943 and another brother, Dr. I. B. Schreckengast, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Collier was an. active member of the Methodist church. The body is at the Griffith Funeral home pending arrangements for rites.

I ATTENDED Harvard University three years and received the degrees A.B. and A.M., my principal work being English and History. I remember with special delight the class work under Professor Child in Bacon, Chaucer, and Shakespeare. In 1895, I was elected Professor of English Literature in Baldwin University, Berea, Ohio. I was Librarian of this institution for five years, Acting President for two years, and Dean of the College Faculty for four years. I was granted the degree of L1rr. D. by Baldwin University in 1906. During the summer of 1910, my wife and I spent six weeks in England and Scotland, and about the same length of time touring Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Western Germany, and France. We had the pleasure of seeing the Passion Play at Oberammergau, Bavaria. I have given several lectures on my trip, particularly concerning the Passion Play. In the fall of 1913, I was appointed Professor of History in Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio. Was publicity chairman of our college faculty and wrote numerous news articles for the press concerning our college and its work. At present I am not engaged in educational work. I made a vigorous fight for Americanism in Baldwin-Wallace College, and succeeded in forcing the President, after an investigation by a special committee, to resign his office. I then started a movement to emphasize the one-language propaganda and true loyalty to our flag in our community and college. Our college has been largely German and dominated by the so-called German-Americans. Our community is not in hearty accord with several administrative heads and pro-Germanism is not entirely eradicated. I prefer mercantile work to such an environment. I am profitably and pleasantly located with the Standard Oil Company, Cleveland, Ohio.

She continued her art work there giving lessons in china painting. She also traveled the state giving lectures on antique glass to museums and clubs. She died at the age of 94 years.

Wright, a leader of the fight against tuberculosis and first Commissioner of the Department of C" critics, were held yesterday afternoon at his late home at 111 Arleigh Road, Douglas Manor, Queens, where he died Thursday at the age of 67. Burial was in Zion Protestant Episcopal churchyard, Douglaston.
Many persons identified with hospital administration and welfare work attended the services, con-ducted by the Rev. Lester Riley, rector of Zion Church. George McAneny, former President of the Board of Aldermen, spoke the eulogy, saying that Mr. Wright's greatest work was in the cause of humanity and as a director of great undertakings, referring to his career as a hospital consultant.
"I have walked arm in arm with Henry C. Wright for thirty years," Mr. McAneny added. "I remember him as a citizen and a father. Wherever he went it was always a benefit to have him as a helper and co-worker. He will be remembered for the substantial and lasting contribution he made to humanity."
Those attending included Richard F. Childs and Charles E. Whitmore, president and secretary, respectively, of the City Club; Henry W. Marsh, Deputy Commissioner of Welfare; Dr. George O'Hanlon, director of the Jersey City Medical Centre, and Miss Marion R. Taber, secretary of the New York City Visiting Committee, There were also delegations from the Queensboro Tuberculosis and Health Association, Queens County Medical Society, American Civic Association, American Hospital Association, National Home Economics Association and National Conference on Social Work.

Burial Notes: He was buried at the Zion Protestant Episcopal Churchyard.

General Notes: Harvard Divinity School at the Turn of the Last Century: Henry Collier Wright (Methodist). Wright was born in Le Roy, Ohio, on 29 August 1868. After attending the Divinity School until 1896, Wright was ordained a deacon and subsequently served in Austin, Minnesota, Dubuque, Iowa, St. Paul, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Ohio. He received a Ph.D. from Boston University in 1900. Wright also served with the Russell Sage Foundation and was the First Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Public Charities in New York City. As a sociologist, he authored numerous books including Bossism in Cincinnati (1906) and The American City (1915). He died in 1935.

The sad tidings of the death of Mr. Oakley G. Norton, from inflammation of the bowels, which occurred at his home near Durant, Iowa, on Saturday, September 21, will be a severe shock to the stockmen of the State, He was among the foremost young men of the State, and widely known, not only us a skillful and honorable breeder, but as an active worker in the various associations of stock breeders. At his death he was secretary of the Iowa Draft Horse Breeders' Association, an active member of the Iowa Short-horn Breeders' and the Improved Stock Breeders' Associations. It is seldom, indeed, that a young man of twenty-seven is brought, by his talent and industry, into positions of greater influence in those associations than was conceded to Mr. Norton. The death of any one of the older members of these associations would have been less surprising.
It is expected that the older men must pass away. A prominent feature of recent meetings of the stockmen of Iowa has been the presence of young men, some of them the sons of
the older members and the remark has frequently been made, that when these older men passed away the interests of the associations would be in safe hands. This reversal of the ordinary course of nature is one of the sad features of Mr. Norton's death, and singularly paralleled by the like calamity that befell Mr. Moninger less than two years ago, in the death of his two sons. Mr. Norton leaves a wife and two children to mourn his untimely death. His untarnished name will long beheld in grateful remembrance by the brotherhood of Iowa stockmen.

General Notes: He graduated from Norton Normal and Scientific College in 1888 and University of Iowa Veterinary College at Iowa State University. What the doctor ordered: In 1912, the Territory of Arizona became the 48th state to be admitted to the Union. For the previous 19 years, Territorial Veterinarian Dr. James Collier Norton had served under seven governors, overseeing the health of the district's growing cattle industry. With statehood granted, he resigned his government post, establishing a dairy and constructing a home on the historic Hancock homestead, which Norton had purchased at the turn of the century. A visionary, Dr. Norton had anticipated residential development on the southern half of this land. Shortly after purchase, he planted prospective gridded streets with tamarack, ash, and orange trees. With completion of his home on the property's northern edge, a large two story Mission Style structure he called Del Norte House, the scene was set for development.

It was just a small town--8,000 people, city limits from Seventh Street to Seventh Avenue and from Van Buren to Jackson Streets containing 31 saloons--Phoenix 1892.
But even in those days, its bright sun and clear air were attracting new citizens. Among the arrivals that year was Dr. James C. Norton of Ames. Iowa. He left a position as assistant professor at Iowa State College to come West for his health, and in the ensuing years became one of the area's outstanding residents.
Today hundreds of cars daily stream by 2700 N. 15th Avenue, his lovely home that once stood in the center of his 200-acre dairy ranch in the countryside west of town.
Dr. Norton was a son of a prosperous Iowa cattle grower. After finishing first in his class of veterinary medicine, he stayed on as an assistant professor until he moved to Phoenix, opened his practice here. That same year, he married his Iowa sweetheart -- Miss Clara Tufts.
His first office was at 144 W. Washington and he kept his horse and buggy across the street. When he received his appointment as territorial veterinarian in May 1893, they provided 10 cents a mile travel expense for the new official.
Before he retired from this position, he was credited with eradicating the cattle tick in the state. In 1904 he was named national president of the United States Livestock Sanitary Association.
When the doctor arrived in the town, he was dismayed to find that there was no Young Men's Christian Association. Through his efforts, first meetings were held in a rented storeroom. The late William B. Christy, a civil war colonel, was first president. Finally, in 1904, a board was elected and Dr. Norton spearheaded the first YMCA building program fund drive.
His association with the First Presbyterian Church spanned nearly 60 years. For 48 he was chairman of its music committee, served as an elder, and was named a commissioner of the general assembly of the church in 1931.
He also found time to serve as president of the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce in 1916, as president of the Arizona Farm Bureau, and a member of the Phoenix Rotary Club. He aided in efforts to rebuild the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks and managed the project to permanently dike the Salton Sea, whose escape necessitated the rebuilding.
In 1912, he resigned as territorial veterinarian to establish the Norton Dairy. The spacious home was built shortly after for his wife, sons James, Oakley and the late Victor, and his late daughter Marietta.
Mrs. W. W. Pickrell recalls living with the Norton family during 1916 and 1917 when she and Marietta attended college in Tempe. In those days, the two younger boys helped with the dairy and the oldest was a student at Occidental College in Los Angeles.

Death Notes: Obituary, Hartford Courant published 18 Jul 1915: Samuel Caldwell Colt, nephew of the late Colonel Samuel Colt, founder of the Colt Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company and who was himself a director of the company for a number of years, died at his home in Farmington Friday Evening. He was born in Philadelphia in 1843. He lived for a while with the family of Colonel Colt. He was a representative from Farmington in 1886. In 1863 he married Mary Goodwin, daughter of Theodore A. Goodwin of Savannah, Ga.; and they celebrated their golden wedding two years ago. Mr. Colt had a stock farm in Farmington, and was one of the first to bring blooded Jersey cattle to this county. They were exhibited all over the country as far west as Chicago, and were awarded many prizes.
He leaves his wife, three sons, Samuel Theodore Colt, David Hill Colt and Harold Gillette Colt of Farmington, and three daughters, Mrs. Hattie Colt Miller of Bridgeport, Mrs. Mary Colt Halton of Sarasota, Fla., and Miss Esther Colt of Farmington.
The funeral will be held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

General Notes: At the funeral of his uncle he was described as a "handsome young man ". In the eyes of the world he was the Colonel's favorite nephew and the son of the convicted murderer John Caldwell Colt, Samuel's younger brother, but according to local gossip he was really the bastard son of the Colonel himself by a German mistress. He gave a birth date at the 1900 census of Dec 1841, almost one year before the jail house marriage of his alleged father, John C Colt to Caroline Henshaw in Nov 1852.

Other than his aunt, Elizabeth Colt and her son Caldwell, Samuel Colt's major beneficiary was Master Samuel Caldwell Colt, "son of my late brother John Caldwell Colt," whom even Mrs. Colt regarded favorably. For a short time this handsome, retiring man worked at the Armory; he became a director but eventually took up gentleman farming. He was always loyal to the memory of Colonel Colt, who his descendants believe was his true father.

Mrs. Colt was born in Milledgeville, Ga., daughter of the late Theodore and Carolyn Lightfoot Goodwin, and came to Hartford at an early age. She married Mr. Colt, nephew of the late Colonel Samuel Caldwell Colt, founder of the Colt Patent Fire Arms Company, on December 16, 1863, at Armsmear, the Colt family home on Wethersfield Avenue.
Mrs. Colt was a member of the South Congregational Church and was a quiet contributor to many charities. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Guy Miller of Brooklawn, Bridgeport; Mrs. Joseph Halton of Sarasota, Fla., and Miss Esther Colt of West Hartford; a son, Harold Gillette Colt of West Hartford; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
The Funeral will be Friday at 2 p. m. at her home. Rev. Warren S. Archibald, pastor of the South Congregational Church will conduct the service. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

General Notes: In 1871 he began practicing law in Chicago, in company with L. L. Palmer (Yale College 1867), under the firm name of Palmer & Colt. The great Chicago fire destroyed the office of the firm and the house in which Colt lived, and he decided to return East. In 1876 he located in Rhode Island, living in Bristol and practicing in Providence. He was associated with Francis Colwell, later City Solicitor of Providence, under the firm name of Colwell & Colt, and continued in practice till he was placed on the bench.
In 1879 he was elected by the town of Bristol to the General Assembly of Rhode Island and served two terms. In March, 1881, during his second term in the Assembly, he was appointed by President Garfield United States District Judge for Rhode Island; and on July 6, 1884, he was appointed by President Arthur United States Circuit Judge for the First Judicial District, including Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rhode
Island. In 1891 a Circuit Court of Appeals was formed to relieve the work of the United States Supreme Court, and Judge Colt was selected as Presiding Justice.
He received the honorary degree of M.A. from Brown in 1882 and the honorary degree of LL.D. from Columbia in 1904 and from Yale in 1905. He was elected United States Senator from the State of Rhode Island, January 21, 1913, for the term of six years, beginning March 4, 1913.
He has been a loyal citizen of Bristol. In 1880 he delivered the address at the Bicentennial Celebration of the town, and in 1883 the address at the Laying of the Corner Stone of the Burnside Memorial Building in that place.

Mrs. Colt was born in Milwaukee in 1851, the daughter of Guy Carlton and Elizabeth (Shepard) Ledyard. She was married to Judge Colt in Chicago in 1873. Since 1875 the Colt' have made their home in Bristol, maintaining a town house in this city. Besides Senator Colt three daughters survive her. They are: Mrs. Edwin A Barrows of Providence; Mrs. Harold J Gross, wife of Lieutenant Governor Gross of Rhode Island, and Mrs. Andrew Weekes Anthony of Bristol.

I., April 3. - Colonel Harold Judson Gross, former Lieutenant Governor, once a Gubernatorial candidate and for many years a leading Rhode Island Republican, died early this morning after an illness of two weeks.
Besides being prominent in State Politics, Colonel Gross was known throughout New England and New York as a real estate operator and a banker. He was a partner in the firms of G. L. & H. J. Gross here and of Gross & Gross in New York.
He was born in Providence sixty years ago, the son of John Mason Gross, a prominent manufacturer, and was educated in the public schools. From high school he entered the insurance business, and latter founded a firm with his brother which grew rapidly and branched out into the real estate field. He was prominent during the World War in community drives and served on many wartime committees. His military title came through his membership in the Rhode Island First Light Infantry.
Colonel Gross was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1920, and at the conclusion of his term ran for Governorship, but was defeated by William S, Flynn.
He was a member of the Providence Police Commission for two years, and at the time of his death was a member of the State House Commission.
Colonel Gross married twice. His first wife was the former Miss Mary Florence Wightman, who died in 1901. She left a daughter, how Mrs. Thomas Harris. In 1907 Colonel Gross married Miss Mary Louise Colt, daughter of the late United States Senator LeBaron B. Colt. Three brothers survive besides his widow and daughter.

Colonel Gross commanded the First Light Infantry of the National Guard for six years. He was Police Commission of Providence from 1904 to 1910. He was a director of many corporations besides those already mentioned. He had been President of the Providence Opera House Association, Vice President of the New England Grocery Company, President of the Textile Finishing and Machinery Company, and Chairman of the State Republican Committee.
One of his Providence friends once said; "You have to grab the Colonel by the coat-tails to have a word with him."

PROVIDENCE, R. I., Aug 13. - Colonel Samuel P. Colt, Chairman of the Board of the United States Rubber Company, died at his Bristol home at 1:10 this afternoon, his death following a severe paralytic shock which he suffered a week ago yesterday.
Colonel Colt had been sinking fast for the past twenty-four hours, and early today it became apparent that the end was near. He was unconscious for several hours before he died. United States Senator Le Baron B. Colt, a brother of Colonel Colt, was at the bedside together with the Colonel's two sons, Roswell C. and Russell G. Colt, and other relatives.
Colonel Samuel Pomeroy Colt came from one of the most distinguished families of this country. Not only was he socially prominent in New England and a figure in the business world, but he had been active in Rhode Island politics. In 1907 he was mentioned as a possibility for the United States Senate, but he withdrew his candidacy. He was a Director or officer in about forty corporations.
Colonel Colt was born in Patterson, N. J. Jan. 120, 1852. His father was Christopher Colt and his mother was Theodora De Wolf Colt, a member of the De Wolf family of Rhode Island. On his father's side he was a descendant of the Colt family of Hartford, Conn. He was named after his uncle Samuel Colt inventor of the Colt's revolver and founder of the Colt's Patent Firm Arms Manufacturing Company of Hartford. His grandfather was Peter Colt of New York.
His mother's family was one of the prominent Colonial families in Rhode Island, and Colonel Colt's summer home in Bristol, R. I. was built in 1810 by his grandfather, General George De Wolf. It was there that he founded the Colt Memorial High School, in memory of his mother. The De Wolfs were extensively engaged in trade with the East and West Indies in the early part of the last century, and they amassed a fortune.
James De Wolf, the Colonel's great-uncle was United States Senator from Rhode Island in 1821. He drove from Bristol to Washington with his own four-in-hand and the coach he used is said to be still preserved. Henry Goodwin of Newport, Attorney General of the state from 1787 to 1789, was a great-uncle. His great-grandfather was Governor William Bradford, the sixth descendant of Governor William Bradford of Plymouth Colony, who crossed on the Mayflower.

Columbia Law School

Colonel Colt received his early education in Hartford and Bristol and following a coarse in Anthon's Grammar School, New York, he entered Massachusetts Institute of Technology when he was 18 years old. He was graduated at 21. Shortly after graduating Colonel Colt went abroad and for a year, 1873-74, he traveled through England and the Continent. He returned to New York and at once entered the Colombia Law School. He received his degree in the Spring of 1876 and in the same year was admitted to practice in this State. In 1877 he was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar.
Even before he became a lawyer Colonel Colt was interested in politics. Governor Henry Lippitt appointed him an aid on his staff in 1875 and from 1876 to 1879 he served as a member of the General Assembly from Bristol. When his term in the Assembly ended Colonel Colt was made Assistant Attorney General of Rhode Island. He served until 1881, when he became the Republican candidate for State Attorney General and was elected. After retirement to private life in 1885 Colonel Colt again visited Europe.
In 1887 Colonel Colt founded the Industrial Trust Company of Providence.

Entered Rubber Field

While President of the trust company he entered, as a legal advisor and reorganizer, the field of rubber manufacturing, of which he was to become the leading executive. The National Rubber Company of Bristol was in bankruptcy, owing its operatives ten month's wages. He took hold with characteristic vigor and resource, became President and started the plant going again in April 1888. Four years later Joseph Banigan, "the rubber king," formed the United States Rubber Company, which was soon merged with the Colt concern, the Colonial taking the Presidency of the combination, which he retained until 1918, retiring then to the Chairmanship of the Board of Directors.

The list of other corporations in which he was a Director includes more than a score of organizations, most of them directly or indirectly in the rubber industry.
Cornel Colt was married in 1881 to Miss Elizabeth M. Bullock. She survives, as do his two sons, Russell Griswold Colt and Roswell Christopher Colt. Russell was married in 1909 to Ethel Barrymore, the actress.

General Notes: Samuel Pomeroy "Pom" Colt was an industrialist and politician from Rhode Island. A farm owned by Colt was later purchased by the state of Rhode Island, and transformed into the Colt State Park.

An appraisal filed 31 Dec 1924 valued his estate at $5,198,966, of which $4,516,404 was in personal property. His two sons in 1927 were reported they would soon attempt to break their father's Will on behave of their children. His public bequest included $50,000 to Brown University, $1,000 to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, $52,000 to the Town of Bristol and $17,500 to St. Michael's Church of Bristol. The following organizations received $8,750 each; Home for Destitute Children, Home for Aged Women, Benjamin Church Home and the Juniper Hill Cemetery. The towns of Warren and Warrington received $8,750.

Marriage Notes: She claimed adultery in an 1895 petition for divorce. In 1912 they entered a separation agreement that gave her $10,000 per year during her lifetime and use of her residence at 25 Charles Field Street, Providence. At the time they had been living apart for tens years which in Rhode Island constituted grounds for divorce but under the agreement here income would be reduced to $5,000 a year therefore they remained legally married and there was no provision for her in his will.

COLT DEAD IN NEWPORT, 76 // Widow of Rubber Financier and Member of Colonial Family -- Son Wed Ethel Barrymore: Newport, R.I. Feb 19. Mrs. Elizabeth M. Bullock Colt, widow of Samuel Pomeroy Colt, died at her residence, Twin Beeches, early this morning after a long illness. The Most Rev. James DeWolf Perry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church will officiate at the funeral at noon on Thursday at St. Michael's Church, Bristol, R.I. Bishop Perry will be assisted by the Rev Stanley C. Hughes, rector of Trinity Church here, which Mrs. Colt attended as long as her health permitted.
Mrs. Colt, who was in the seventy-seventh year, was a member of one of the oldest Bristol families, a daughter of the late J Russell and Amelia DeWolf Bullock. Her family dated from Colonial days. She was a member of the American Revolution and of the Colonial Dames as well as the Colony Club.
Her late husband was at one time president of the United States Rubber Company. She is survived by a son, Russell Griswold Colt, divorced husband of Ethel Barrymore, and by three grandchildren, Ethel Barrymore Colt and John Drew Colt; another son, Roswell Colt, also survives.
In 1929 Mrs. Colt purchased the property of the late Dr. A. F. Squire on Catherine Street, improved it and had made the estate her home ever since. She had become a legal resident of this city.

General Notes: Biography: He was president of the Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company and of the Fidelity Company, both of Hartford, lecturer at Yale University, bank director, and a prominent factor in the city government of Hartford, was born in that city on the eighth of June, 1848. The Holcombe ancestry is very interesting and distinguished and embraces men of note in every walk of life. John Marshall Holcombe is a descendant of Thomas Holcombe, who settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1635 and was later a settler and deputy in Windsor, Connecticut. He is in the same line of descent as Amasa Holcombe, the distinguished scientist, and Rev. Frederick Holcombe, the eminent divine and founder of Trinity College. Among Mr. Holcombe's ancestors were three Revolutionary soldiers and many other men prominent in early American history, including John Webster, one of the early Colonial governors of Connecticut; William Phelps, magistrate and deputy to the General Court for many sessions; Edward Griswold, also magistrate and deputy for thirty-five years; Captain Joseph Wadsworth, who hid the charter in the oak, and Gen. Nathan Johnson, an officer in the War of 1812, who was also State senator. These and many other ancestors came from England and were early settlers and proprietors in Colonial and later times. Mr. Holcombe's father was James Huggins Holcombe, a lawyer, who was clerk of court and of the House and Senate of Connecticut. He was characterized by the usual New England traits of rectitude, fidelity, and thrift. Mr. Holcombe's mother was Emily Merrill Holcombe.
The city of Hartford has been Mr. Holcombe's home and the center of all his interests from his earliest days and he is now living there in the house in which he was born. He attended the Hartford Public High School and then entered Yale College, where he received his B.A. degree in 1869 and his M.A. degree three years later. In 1869 he began his career as an insurance man in the office of the actuary of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, and in 1871 he became actuary of the insurance department of the State of Connecticut, which office he held for three years. In 1874 he became assistant secretary of the Phoenix Mutual Life, the following year he was made secretary and, in 1889, vice-president of the company of which he is now the president. He is also president of the Fidelity Company, a director in the American National Bank, in the Connecticut Fire Insurance Company, in the Mechanics Savings Bank of Hartford, and in the National Surety Company of New York. In addition to these interests he has been a lecturer at Yale University, in the insurance course. This last named position shows, even more than his many other business positions, what a capable authority he is on the important subject of life insurance. He has also written valuable articles on life insurance for the North American Review.
In the municipal affairs of Hartford Mr. Holcombe has taken as important a part as he has in the business life. He brought about the organization of the board of health and served on it for many years. In 1883 he was a member of the common council and, in 1885, he was a member of the board of aldermen, and he was president of both of these branches of city government. He is a director of the board of trade and of the Retreat for the Insane. In politics he is a Republican and in creed a Congregationalist, being a member of the Center Church of Hartford. He has been president of the Yale Alumni Association of Hartford, is a member of the University Club of New York, of the Sons of the American Revolution, of the Society of Colonial Wars, the Society of the War. of 1812, of the Hartford Club, and a fellow of the Actuarial Society of America, another evidence of his high place among the life insurance "captains" of to-day. Mrs. Holcombe was Emily Seymour Goodwin, whom he married January 29th, 1873, and by whom he has had three children, a daughter and two sons: Harold Goodwin Holcombe, Emily Marguerite Holcombe, and John Marshall Holcombe, Jr. Mrs. Holcombe is as much a leader in social, intellectual, and patriotic circles as her husband is in business and public affairs.

Death Notes: Obituary - William Henry Ely was taken ill on Saturday, May 22nd, and passed away early on the morning of Wednesday, May 26th, 1909, at his home in New Haven.
He was born in Hartford, November 27th, 1856, where he received his early education. He was graduated from the Hartford High School in 1873, and from Amherst College in the class of 1877. He studied law with Briscoe & Maltbie of Hartford, and was admitted to the bar in that city May 27th, 1879.
Commencing the practice of his profession in Winsted, Connecticut, Mr. Ely continued there until June 28th, 1884, when he moved to New Haven and formed a partnership with William C. and William S. Case, under the name of Case, Ely, Case. This firm was succeeded by the firm of Case, Ely & Webb. Upon the death of William C. Case, this firm was succeeded by that of Ely & Barclay; and on July 1st, 1907, the partnership of Ely, Zacher & Ely, of which he was senior member at the time of his death, the junior member being his only son and child, William Brewster Ely, was formed.
After his admission to the bar, Mr. Ely's lot was not an easy one. With no one to create business for him, his hard work and his success alone brought clients to him. His cases were carefully and well prepared. In reading the law applicable to his cases, the underlying principles and questions were studied and understood, so that the beginning of a trial found him master of the facts and law. It was a delight to hear him argue questions of law. Involved points became so plain that a layman could understand them. He was an aggressive, but a fair, fighter. To be associated with Mr. Ely in a case was to have the aid of a lawyer thoroughly equipped, and one who knew how to use the equipment. To have him as an opponent was to know that no trickery would be used, but every possible legitimate aid to win the fight would be employed. As a cross-examiner Mr. Ely had few equals, and certainly no superiors, among his associates at the New Haven County bar. There was no noise; no splurge. He achieved his object. The testimony sought was given, before the witness, yes, at times even before his adversary, realized it. Gradually his great ability as a lawyer and his rugged honesty were recognized and became generally known, and he was retained in very many of the most important cases brought in the county. He was about to reap what he had sown, to realize the financial reward for his labor, when he was so suddenly and unexpectedly called away.
Mr. Ely hated, and never lost an opportunity to denounce, all sham and hypocrisy. At no time and at no place did he fail to expose them. He was also keen to detect them. Necessarily he made some enemies, but this did not deter him, and necessarily this quality made men respect him and made loyal friends of those who shared this hatred with him.
Mr. Ely had sociable qualities. He loved to entertain and be entertained. Surrounded by those with whom he loved to be, he was the life of the gathering, and was indeed "a good fellow" among good fellows.

Hubbard, died yesterday morning at a private sanitarium in Enfield, after an illness of several years. He was born in this city, December 6, 1850, his mother being Mary (Morgan) Hubbard. He attended Hartford schools and was graduated from the high school. He was executive secretary during the time his father was governor from 1877 to 1879. Mr. Hubbard went into the firm of Hubbard & Farmer, bankers and brokers, with an office on Central Row. He was later in business alone as a broker. He was a member of the New York Stock Exchange. For the pas ten years he had been an invalid, being almost bedridden because of paralysis. He was a member of the Hartford Club and the Farmington Country Club. He was of a genial disposition and was a man with warm friends. Mr. Hubbard is survived by his widow, who was Miss Fiege, daughter of the late Augustus F. Fiege of this city; son Dudley W. Hubbard, teller at the Aetna National Bank; and a sister, Mr. Arthur K Brocklesby of this city.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at his residence, No. 45 Highland street, West Hartford. The burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
