General Notes: The first record for subject was his birth, registered Jan/Mar 1879 in the District of St Faiths, Norfolk County, England. The 1881 English census showed him aged two and his mother staying with her parents at Wroxham, Norfolk, England. He was age ten when he arrived in America 19 Sep 1887 with his mother and three siblings.

A descendant reported he fought in the Spanish American War (1898) and earned a medal for his service. He was not at the family's Commerce residence at the 1900 census (a separate census record could not be found). He had arrived in Iowa by 1906 where he married Mary Jane Elder. By the 1910 federal census at age 29 he was residing at 81 E 11th St., Bluff Creek, Monroe County, Iowa, with wife Jennie, age 24, and two children. By the 1915 Iowa census at age 35, he was residing in Bidwell, Wapello County, Iowa. His occupation was Coal miner, 1914 income was $400 and had been unemployed for two months. The extent of his education was 6th grade. By the 1920 federal census at age 39, he was renting at 281 E 3rd St, Dallas, Iowa, with wife and five children. His name was listed as "Jack A", employed as a coal miner. At the 1925 Iowa census he was renting ($17/month) in Dallas, Iowa, with wife and six children. At the 1930 census he was renting ($20/month) at 134 Main St, Dallas. He filed a Petition for Naturalization 10 Feb 1943 which was granted 1 Nov 1943, Denver, Colorado (book 88, page 905, certificate #6040711). He listed his birth date as; 6 Nov 1880, London, Middlesex, England. He described himself as; 5" 8", 175 lbs, scar on left cheek.

His granddaughter reported he worked in explosives in the mining field as did his sons. He and his wife had a summer house in Georgetown, Colorado.

General Notes: At the 1910 census she was age 24, married five years and had born three children, two still alive. The 1930 Census showed her name as Jennie. She was known as Jane by her family and remembered as a wonderful woman.

She was also a lifetime member of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Vermont Mappin and Fred Mappin; stepson, Jack Mappin and brother, Charles Teas. Survivors included two brothers, Tom Teas of Mason City and Pete Teas of Indianola. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indianola Good Samaritan Center activity fund. General Notes: At the 1930 census, Helen was age 17 and residing with her parents at Dallas, Marion County, Iowa. In her later years she lived with her brother Russell and his family in Boulder, Colorado.

(Susan Mappin Foley - Niece) Helen Dawn never had her own children. My brother and I were sort of her children and when my folks were in AZ in the winter I took care of her. When she passed away she left everything to my Dad, as he was about all of the Mappin's that were left. Her home was at 917 LaFarge, Louisville, Colorado. It's still there and cute. When Aunt Helen died I inherited all of her Mappin photos. I also received her beautiful old dining room table that I adore and sit at, as I write. We have a lot of funny stories about her, she was feisty and fun.

She was aged 3 months at the 1881 England census, staying with her mother & mother's parents. She was age six when she arrived in America 19 Sep 1887 with her mother and three siblings. Annie was no longer in the Mappin Household on the 1900 census, however a census record was located for an Annie L Weldon, age 19, (born Jan 1881 in England), residing nearby married one year to William N. Weldon (age 40), head of household and a farmer. Also at household were two children; Clarence, age 14 (presumed to be Annie's stepson) and daughter; Hettie I. age eight months (b. Sep 1899).

No further record of the family could be located. She was not listed with her siblings in her father's 1920 death notice, therefore presumed deceased.

General Notes: Census records had enumerated him: William N. Weldon (1900), Newton W. Weldon (1860 & 1880) and Wilborn N. Weldon (1870). Correct name probably Wiborn Newton Weldon. supported by a 1890 Georgia Property Tax digest (Harrisburg, Jackson County - Post Office: Jefferson).

Also enumerated were wife Millie (age 33), and three young children including son Lonnie M. Weldon (age two months). He resided at (Militia District 255) in 1900 in Newton, Jackson, Georgia. ⁸¹ At the 1900 census he was enumerated at William N. Weldon (age 40, Farmer). Also enumerated were wife Annie L. (age 19), daughter Hettie (age eight months) and son Clarence Weldon (age 14, born Jan 1886). Residing at adjacent residence on what appears to be the same property was his son by prior marriage, Lonnie M Weldon (age 20, Farme) and wife Rosa C (age 19).

General Notes: The first record for subject was his birth, registered Jul/Sep 1883 as Frederick James Mappin in the District of Wandsworth, Greater London, Surrey, England. He was age four when he arrived in America 19 Sep 1887 with his mother and three siblings. At the 1900 census at age 16 he was living with his parents and siblings at Commerce, Georgia, occupation was Farm Laborer. At the 1910 census he was age 26, residing as "boarder" at Des Moines, Iowa, employed as a "House Painter". The 1918 obituary for Ann Mappin (mother) mentioned survived by "five sons, Fred, of Florence, SC…."

His WWI Draft Registration Card gave his residence as Florence, South Carolina, and wife's name Mary W. His physical description was; Height -Tall, Build - Stout, brown eyes, brown hair. At the 1920 census he was still living at Florence, South Carolina. Also at residence was J. T. Pelham, age 18, his step-son. He lived in Orlando, Florida, in the mid-1920s and by the 1930 census had moved to Alabama City, Alabama, where he operated a gas station, with the family living in the rear. In the 1930s he moved to Bennettsville, South Carolina, where he owned the Beauty Spot Court, a motel / restaurant and gas station where the family lived. He retired about 1948 and moved to Orlando. He was in poor health and lived the last five years of his life with his daughter at West Palm Beach, Florida.

Also enumerated were his wife Mary W. (age 55), adopted daughter Freddie M. (age 15) and step-son J. T. Pelham (age 26), Claude D. Thurmond (age 24), his nephew, and three negroes listed a "hired hands". Edmonton was described in 1911 as consisting " largely of the cottages of artisans". He owned his property and occupation was "General Farmer". His two oldest children; Kermit (age 22) and Gartrell (age 20) were employed as "Farm Laborers". In his latter years he lived until death with his daughter, Henrietta Thurmond Channell.

Harry Clayton Thurmond was a partner in a dry goods store in Commerce, Georgia, called Thurmond and Key (perhaps the source of the name of son, Kermit Key Thurmond)

He had five sons in World War 2.

The Atlanta Constitution, April 15, 1923: MAPPIN GIVEN FINE AND IS BOUND OVER / G.W. Mappin, of 142 Oakland avenue, was fined $25 and bound over under a $300 bond on the charge of operating an automobile while intoxicated by Judge George E. Johnson Saturday afternoon in recorder's court. Officers testified that Mappin was driving his car Friday evening on Hunter street at a high rate of speed, and suddenly crashed into a car parked near the curb, slightly injuring one or two of the occupants who were sitting in the car. This was Mappin's second offense within the past ten days, it was said.

He was age 50 at the 1940 census. Also enumerated at residence were wife Cora Lee (age 50); sons Hugh (age 19), John (age 17), Hoyt (age 9) and daughter Betty Jo (age 11)

George married Cora Lee McLEON, daughter of James J. McLEON and Margaret DAVIS, on 15 Feb 1914 in Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia.¹⁰⁷ Cora was born in Dec 1888 in , , Georgia^{³^,108} and died on 26 Jun 1966 in , Dekalb County, Georgia^³ at age 77.

Marriage Notes: Marriage Announcement: MCLEON - MAPPIN Miss Cora McLeon and Mr. George W. Mappin were married at the home of Rev. William Bell, 30 Jones Avenue, Sunday, February 15, in the presence of a number of their friends. They will make their home at No. 55 Nelson Street.

General Notes: The 1900 census listed a twin sister; Flora V. McLeon. At the 1910 Census Cora Lee & Flora V. (ages 21) still living with father; James J McLeon at; Mossy Creek, White County, Georgia. Twin sister Flora V McLeon died 26 Aug 1975 at Fulton County, Georgia at age 85.
