Opportunities
Since 1966, Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc. (LSGMI) has provided
free legal assistance in civil matters to persons whose income falls
below 125% of the poverty level. Funding is received primarily from the
Legal Services Corporation, the Florida Bar Foundation, and Miami-Dade
County, with additional funding coming from State, local and private
grants.
LSGMI’s 70 member staff currently serves Miami-Dade and
Monroe
Counties from three full service offices and a network of neighborhood
offices. Miami-Dade County is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual community
with over 450,000 poor people. LSGMI staff are multi-ethnic and
multi-lingual as well. LSGMI aggressively recruits minority attorneys
to maintain this balance.
Staff attorneys are assigned to one of the four substantive law
specialty units: Housing, Employment and Economic Security, Family and
Education Law, and Community Economic Development. Supervision in each
unit is provided by a Senior Attorney who coordinates all program work
in the unit pursuant to an annual work plan. Each attorney also has a
direct supervisor who provides daily supervision. The Executive
Director provides overall coordination of all litigation and other
advocacy. The Director of Training and Professional Development directs
LSGMI’s orientation and training program.
The full range of legal representation is provided in priority areas
set annually by the Board of Directors. Staff advocate in state,
federal, administrative and appellate forums. High quality
representation is the goal. Staff are expected to balance individual
service cases, impact work, and community legal education/pro se
clinics. Private attorney involvement is also a component of service
delivery.
LSGMI places special emphasis on the specialized needs of vulnerable
client populations. The Homeless Legal Assistance Project addresses the
specialized legal problems of the homeless. The AIDS Legal Advocacy
Project provides a broad range of legal services to meet the unique
needs of persons with AIDS and their families.
LSGMI seeks highly motivated, aggressive staff with a demonstrated
commitment to working with poor people and community groups. Language
proficiency in Spanish or Creole is highly desirable. A two year
commitment to LSGMI is required. Attorneys must take the next available
Florida Bar examination. Attorneys with three (3) years of experience
may practice under a special practice rule pending Florida Bar results.
Salary varies depending upon experience. Excellent benefits are
