THE CAMPAIGN FOR JUSTICE
Equal justice under the law...is perhaps the most inspiring ideal in our society."
Former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr.
Because of the generosity of the Friends of Equal Justice, Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc. (LSGMI) has been able to help individuals and families who otherwise would have been victims of injustice. Here are a few examples of the over 5,500 people in our community we helped during the past year:
Monique, a Haitian mother of three, was beaten so severely by her husband that he injured her back and bladder, leaving her with a hefty medical bill. LSGMI helped Monique get a permanent injunction against her husband, and a court order requiring him to pay her medical bills and ongoing child support.
Ms. H. almost lost her home of 30 years because family members forged her name to use the home as collateral for their bail bonds. LSGMI stopped the foreclosure and saved her home. LSGMI also got her a reverse mortgage which provides her with a small monthly income based on the equity in the home.
Elijah, a 14 year old boy with Blount’s Disease which limits his ability to walk, was improperly denied Supplemental Security Income disability benefits. LSGMI successfully represented Elijah at an administrative hearing, and he now gets monthly benefits to help with his care and Medicaid to meet his medical needs.
When Danny moved to Miami, his father was told by his new school that Danny could not get the exceptional student education services that he had been receiving in Virginia due to his disability. Five years later when Danny was failing and being suspended, LSGMI helped keep Danny in school and get the services he needed.
The federal Legal Services Corporation and the Florida Bar Foundation are our primary sources of funding, with additional funding coming from state, local and private grants. We also receive contributions through the United Way Contributor Choice Program. Your contribution will ensure that we can continue to fight for fairness, and that people in our community will have some place to turn when their rights are denied. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated!
Yes, I would like to become a Friend of Equal Justice!
